The First Nighter: For Pete\'s Sake
The First Nighter aired for 23 years from 1930 to 1953. In each episode the listener is introduced to a new play that was supposedly broadcast from the ’little theater on Times Square’. Actually it was broadcast initially from Chicago and in its later years from Hollywood. In each show the listener is taken to “the little theater off Times Square” to be part of the “opening night performance” of drama and comedy. All the illusions of Broadway were heard during the opening of each broadcast. Taxi horns, the sounds of crowded sidewalks, police whistles, etc. Into the theater the listener overheard all the sounds of the curtain going up, and after a quick reading of the program, the production for the evening.
’For Pete’s Sake’ was originally broadcast on June 30, 1949. In this comedy an aspiring Hollywood talent scout mistakes the identity of an young and beautiful actress and signs her Mother to a film contract. All works out in the end however.
